First Tesla Sighting and Embracing EVs in MT and WY
It was a crisp morning at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park when we witnessed a milestone for Montana: the first Tesla sighting. The sleek, silent car drew curious onlookers, and we were fortunate enough to meet its proud owner, Gary. Enthusiastic about his groundbreaking vehicle, Gary graciously offered us a ride, showcasing the car's impressive capabilities.
Our son, Tanner, known to many as Rockin' TNT, was particularly thrilled. Gary's passion for electric vehicles extended beyond just a ride; he generously introduced the car to Tanner's school, capturing the fascination of young minds and even making a splash on the local news.
This encounter planted a seed of curiosity and excitement about the future of electric transportation.
A few years later, this curiosity blossomed into action. We invested in a Ford Lightning F150 Lariat, an electric truck that embodies the rugged spirit of Montana while championing sustainable energy. Our first adventure with the Lightning was a special one, marking the beginning of our journey with the Yellowstone Eco Tourism Initiative (Y.E.T.I.).
On Christmas Day, we had the pleasure of guiding an Iranian couple through the park. Their excitement was palpable when they laid eyes on our "BIG AMERICAN TRUCK!" Rakeesh, the husband, couldn't contain his enthusiasm, examining every detail and marveling at the advanced technology of the vehicle. It was a moment of connection, transcending cultural boundaries through shared admiration for innovation.
Driving through Yellowstone with the Ford Lightning felt like a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. The quiet hum of the electric engine allowed us to fully immerse in the natural beauty around us, enhancing the eco-friendly ethos of our tours.
The adventure didn't end there. One day, while charging at an Electrify America station outside Target, TNT and I encountered a family eager to learn about our truck. Exhausted from the day's activities, I was reluctant but understood the importance of spreading awareness. Begrudgingly, I showed them around, explaining the benefits and features of our electric vehicle.
As we climbed back into the truck, I let out a weary sigh, feeling the weight of the responsibility that comes with pioneering change. In that moment, Tanner turned to me and, with a wisdom beyond his years, said, "Dad, with cool stuff comes great responsibility!" His words resonated deeply, reminding me why we embarked on this journey in the first place.
Our story is a testament to the evolving landscape of transportation in Montana and Wyoming. From witnessing the first Tesla to driving our Ford Lightning through Yellowstone, we have embraced the promise of electric vehicles. We hope our journey inspires others to consider the benefits of going electric, not just for the environment, but for the unique and enriching experiences it offers.
